Sue Book Author Reading

This is a free in-class program for K-3 classes. The author comes to your class and reads 2 of the books, which kids have now started to refer to as “Sue Book” series. Many programs cost money, and this is something simple and free that Rozsika does for the school community, since she has children in elementary school, and knows how fun it can be to have a visitor in class.

Listed below are the details of the program, as well as a brief description and link to preview the books.

How can I set this up at my school or in my class?
Click on the Contact link found on this website. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have, and find a time to offer it at your school! I can accommodate longer sessions as well as some customization.

Who is it by?
  • The author of Sue Books, Rozsika den Haan lives in Burnaby, and has worked in teaching and education for over 15 years.
  • She understands what kids like, because she is a parent of elementary school children.
What are Sue Books?
  • Sue books are written in a simple comic book style, which younger readers or beginning readers don’t often have available at their level.
  • Kids love the books because they are funny, but most of all because they are easy to read! The books have easy vocabulary, but also have teaching topics and life lessons within each book.
Who / What Grades?
  • Kindergarten – Grade 3 Classes and Students
When?
  • During class time the author comes in and reads 2-3 Sue Books.
How long?
  • 15-20 minutes for each division.
  • Minimum 3 Divisions (about a 1 hour block).
  • Each book takes about 5 minutes to read.
  • Teachers go below and preview each book, or can go to Blurb (search: Rozsika or Sue Book) to preview the books.
  • Teachers then choose which 2-3 books they think would be best for the author to read to their class.
Teacher Cost?
  • FREE!
Follow-up?
  • There is a book order form students can take home to optionally order any of the Sue books.
  • For every 20 books ordered from a school (all divisions combined), the school library will get one free copy of a Sue book!
  • If the teachers, PAC or school would like to, the author can come back one day after school and have an author book signing.
How do I sign up!
  • Talk to some teachers and get 3 or more divisions together.
  • Find some dates and times that work for all of you in a 1 hour block.
  • Classes can be combined, no problem.
